The craft beer revolution is well and truly upon us West Ashley. Where once we were limited to the workmanlike efforts of Palmetto Brewing and the scattered attempts from others, in 2007 the floodgates were flung open. Where once there was a barely discernible trickle, there now exists a healthy and constant flowing creek. Yet, expect this tributary to soon be a mighty river of beer.
It was seven yearsa go when the award-winning Coast Brewing began to make great beers and big waves in the Charleston beer seen. Efforts to change archaic beer laws in the South Carolina opened up the path for the craft beer waterway into Charleston. Since then, the party has been joined by Westbrook, Holy City, and River Dog amongst others, and Charleston is awash in sudsy joy.
But hold on to your hats and pints kids, the craft beer crazy is about to take over Charleston in a big way and it’s coming in from the West … West Ashley, that is. Sure the northwest may be the land of the beer, and home to the craft beer movement. Of course, Asheville, North Carolina is now the address of beer town USA, and boasts more breweries per capita than anywhere else. But not for long.
West Ashley is about to drown Charleston in craft beer. Thirty-eight, that’s right, 38! breweries, micro brews, and brew pubs are set to open by 2015 in 29407 and 29414.
Paperwork is either complete or has begun for the opening, ground-breaking, or re-introduction of 38 West Ashley breweries by next year. Are you ready? Are you kidding? Can you believe it? Well, you shouldn’t. It’s not true. April Fools! Enjoy the brews … Cheers.

Gene’s Haufbrau has at more than 200 beers in bottles or on tap. While they don’t have every beer the Beer Snob writes about, they probably have most. Gene’s is located at 817 Savannah Hwy. 225-GENE. E-mail the Beer Snob at publisher@westof.net.
