The following were taken from actual incident reports filed last week by the City of Charleston’s Police Department. These are not convictions and the names of businesses, complainants, and suspects have been left off to protect the innocent. All suspects are  innocent until proven guilty, of course.

Criminal domestic violence/simple assault
A woman living in a Wappoo Road apartment told police that her live-in boyfriend slapped her in the face during an argument about him seeing other women after she asked him to move out. She reported her boyfriend as saying: “You are not [expletive] taking away my child from me.” When the police arrived, the woman was in a neighbor’s apartment, and the man answered the door holding his 6-month-old child. After police found swelling on the woman’s face, the man was arrested.

Aggravated assault with a knife
A woman living in a Mulberry Street apartment who has custody of her 14-year-old nephew told police that the boy had chased her around their residence with a paring knife after yelling: “You’re gonna die tonight!” The boy, who reportedly has been diagnosed with a host of mental and physical issues, had earlier fought with the woman’s daughter.

Simple assault
A woman claimed a man picked her up for a date, took her out for lunch, replete with two beer/margarita drinks, and then started getting grabby back at his place. Uninterested, she asked to be taken home, and along the way the man began hitting the dashboard with his fists, exclaiming: “I bought you Chinese food and you won’t open your legs to me!” The woman asked to be let out of the car at the corner of Sam Rittenberg Boulevard and Orange Grove Road. Not only did the man let the woman out, but he also allegedly took her 1-year-old child and his car seat out of the backseat of the car and placed it in the roadway before pulling away.

Criminal domestic violence/aggravated assault with a firearm
A woman living in an Orange Grove Road apartment complex told police that her boyfriend and father of her child began hitting her in the head and face repeatedly with his fists and a pistol, with her losing count of the number of blows. The woman said the two began arguing over call records on the boyfriend’s phone to another woman’s number, and quickly escalated to yelling, At one point, the woman said her boyfriend pulled out a pistol and began hitting her with the butt of the gun, causing it to discharge a single round before falling to the floor. When the boyfriend stopped hitting the woman, she escaped outside and stabbed three of the four tires on his car with a knife. Police were able to retrieve the fired bullet from the apartment’s wall, and soon found the car, flat tires and all, in a nearby neighborhood.

Drunkenness
Police following up on a 911 hang-up at a Sam Rittenberg pet store, arrived to find an employee standing over an apparently inebriated man, face down in front of the store. The employee was holding a small white dog that belonged to the man. EMS responded to take the man away, but not before the man gave the employee permission to take the dog home.

Found/lost/confiscated property
An employee of a Sam Rittenberg Boulevard apartment complex cleaning up the parking lot found something he didn’t expect inside a discarded fast-food paper bag. Not only did he find a professional-level scale, but he also found a baggie containing more than 22 grams of marijuana. When police inspected the area where he found the narcotics and paraphernalia, they also found a small amount of rolling tobacco on the ground.

Burglary
In two separate reports, two homes on W. Linear Drive reported having been broken into through their garages. One of the homes was missing tools and some gold bands, valued at close to $800. Nothing was reported missing from the other home.

Suicide
Police investigating a reported suicide found a man in a wooded area on the edge of an Ashley River Road cemetery. The man was found with an apparent gunshot-wound to the head. Emergency medical personnel declared him dead at the scene, and the investigation continues.
