The following were taken from actual incident reports filed last week by the City of Charleston Police Department. These are not convictions and the names of businesses, complainants, and suspects have been left out to protect the innocent. All suspects are  innocent until proven guilty … of course.

Wire fraud
A Sage Way woman suspected her identity had been stolen when she began receiving “hundreds” of foreign-language emails 10 days prior. Her concerns were supported when she discovered that over $7,500 had been wired from her bank accounts to an account in Texas and all of her cellphone calls had been rerouted.

Injured party
A Wayah Drive man reported to police that his girlfriend’s male roommate was suicidal over an unsuccessful relationship with a woman and had a gun. When police arrived, the roommate had barricaded himself into his bedroom. The object of his desire showed police a text that read: “If you hear a gun go off, don’t go into my room.” The man had reportedly shown a drop in his demeanor since being released from jail recently. After SWAT showed up, the man walked out of the apartment and surrendered his firearm.
May 24 Simple assault
A trio of Skinner Avenue neighbors had an altercation after one of the men fell down and attempted to hit one of his neighbors with his cane. The elderly neighbor had reportedly tried to incite a reaction from his younger neighbor, calling him “gay and pussy,” and asking the man’s very young daughter, “How does it feel to be touched by a child molester?” A third neighbor, who was using a weedeater and could not hear the comments made, tried to intervene.

Assisting other agencies
A police officer responded to an alarm from an ATM machine at an Ashley River Road bank. When the officer arrived, he parked his cruiser behind a car parked in front of the ATM, causing two men to emerge and jump into the car and drive off quickly. When the car hauled out, it struck the cement curb, causing one of the tires to go flat. When the driver then pulled the car into a nearby store’s parking lot, both men ran off in different directions. The officer was able to overtake one of the men on foot, who soon admitted that the other man in the car with him was his brother.

A man told police all he remembered was that he walked out to his car in the parking lot of an Ashley Pointe Drive restaurant, being followed by two men; and being hit in the head by the men before losing consciousness. Police spoke to the man’s girlfriend and her best friend, who admitted to having told “random people” in the bar about his alleged ongoing physical abuse of his girlfriend at home. The man reportedly has a pending charge and trial in the alleged abuse.
