The following were taken from actual incident reports filed last week by the City of Charleston’s Police Department. These are not convictions and the names of businesses, complainants, and suspects have been left off to protect the innocent. All suspects are  innocent until proven guilty, of course.

Injured party
A man nearly drowned in front of his family at an Ashley Hall Plantation apartment complex pool. One of the residents was swimming at the pool and noticed the man floating in the water, not moving. The resident asked the man’s family if he was all right, to which they said he normally floats like that. After a few minutes, the resident again asked the family if the man was still fine, prompting a family member to jump into the water and discover the man was not breathing. The man was pulled out of the water and CPR was administered. Conscious but not speaking, the man was transported to a local hospital’s intensive care unit due to swelling in his lungs.

An officer on the lookout for a car with a passenger swinging a handgun out the back window observed a vehicle fitting the description changing lanes without using indicator lights. Pulling the car over, the officer asked the driver if there were any weapons in the car. At which point, the driver’s boyfriend yelled out from the back seat that, “everything was his.” Searching the car, the officer found a loaded .38 special semiautomatic handgun and nearly an ounce of marijuana in the child safety-seat located in the backseat. A computer check showed that the pistol was also stolen.

Drunkenness
Officers arrived at a Savannah Highway motel to find a woman lying on her back, inebriated, in front of a second-floor room. When she couldn’t walk after being helped to her feet, she was arrested for public intoxication.
