The following were taken from actual incident reports filed last week by the City of Charleston Police Department. These are not convictions and the names of businesses, complainants, and suspects have been left off to protect the innocent. All suspectsare  innocent until proven guilty, of course.
August 4 | Criminal domestic violence
Police were dispatched to a Dupont Road residence in response to a domestic violence report. When they arrived, they found two women, one covered in blood. Police found no one else in the residence, as the alleged assailant had apparently fled.
August 5  | Murder, non-negligent manslaughter
Police responded to a Braxton Avenue apartment due to a report of a possible gunshot wound. When they arrived, they found the female resident of the unit had been shot, and there were no signs of forced entry. Later, the late woman’s husband turned himself in, claiming to have been responsible for what he said was an accidental shooting.
August 5 | Robbery, knife
A loss prevention officer told police a man allegedly attempting to shoplift $300 in sunglasses had threatened him with a knife. The loss prevention officer had been watching the man try on women’s sunglasses and said he’d seen the man slip the alarm off the glasses inside the Sam Rittenberg Boulevard department store. When he approached the man outside the store, a physical struggle ensued, with both men ending up in the bushes. The officer said the man then said he had a knife in pocket and “I will stab or kill you.” He also said he couldn’t go back to jail. The man soon fled on a moped.
August 5 | Swindle
Two men attempting to rent an Ashley Hall Road apartment claimed to have been swindled by an online crook. The men saw the apartment for rent on a community board and contacted the “owner,” who claimed to live in Alabama. The owner said go check out the $600 unit and that he needed a $1,200 first check. The men liked the unit but only had $850, which they sent to the man with a check card. To make sure they weren’t getting swindled, they had another friend call the man from another number, and the “owner” said the unit was still available. They immediately contacted police, who discovered the unit was actually being handled by a Charleston-based realty firm.
August 5 | Impersonation
A Briarcliff Drive woman once again had to call police to stop people from stopping by her apartment after a fake dating website had been created with her likeness, name, address, and telephone number. The woman had no idea who created the website. Police for the second night in a row arrived and turned vehicles away from visiting the woman’s residence.
August 5 | Recovered stolen property, vehicle
An officer on patrol was following a moped down Savannah Highway whose driver was constantly looking behind him at the officer. When the driver ignored a stop signal, the officer decided to pull over the driver. But before he could initiate a stop, the driver leapt off the moped and fled on foot. The driver was soon found hiding under a trailer. The moped didn’t have a key and the ignition appeared to have been altered. Further investigation found that the moped had been stolen from the police impound lot. The true owner was found and picked up his moped.
August 6 | Vandalism
A Trailmore Drive woman reported a man running out of her house with a knife and stabbing at least one of the tires on her car parked outside. The man was last seen shirtless and bald fleeing on a moped. Further inspection revealed that an additional rear tire had been slashed.
