The following were taken from actual incident reports filed last week by the City of Charleston Police Department. These are not convictions and the names of businesses, complainants, and suspects have been left off to protect the innocent. All suspects are  innocent until proven guilty, of course.

Criminal domestic violence, simple assault
A woman living on 5th Street told police that her husband had struck her in the eye with a thrown shoe when she tried to get him to move a vehicle parked behind her car. The man admitted to having thrown the shoe, but said his wife had woken him from sleep and was yelling at him. He said she then attempted to hit him in the head, but he kicked her in the stomach.

A Savannah Highway motel general manager reported at least seven checks having been stolen and cashed from his location’s business account at several local banks. The total of money stolen was close to $2,800.
August 5 All other offenses
A worker at an Ashley River Road restaurant attempted to stop a non-customer from dumping their trash in their private dumpster. “What are you, the trash police?” the person demanded before driving away. Management reported that due to an ongoing problem of people using their dumpster as their own, they will purchase a locking dumpster.

August 6
Disorderly conduct
Police responded to a verbal fight in the parking lot of a Sam Rittenberg bank. When they arrived, they found a man and his wife arguing loudly in a car; the man’s yelling was audible outside the car. The wife claimed that her husband was very intoxicated and high on drugs and had broken her cellphone during a previous argument. They had come to the bank so he could withdraw money to buy her a new cellphone. While she was speaking with officers, the husband continued to yell obscenities. Officers gave him several opportunities to calm down, and when he continued to yell, arrested him.
August 7
Robbery, firearm
A man and woman told police they were stopped at the intersection of Grech and Juniper streets and robbed at gunpoint. Police processed their vehicle for prints where it was then parked, at Citadel Mall.

A maintenance worker at an Ashley River Road apartment complex reported smelling a “bad” odor coming out of one of the units he couldn’t gain access to during an asbestos check. Fire department workers got into the apartment through an open front window and found the resident dead, lying on the floor, on his side.

A Sam Rittenberg Boulevard bank informed a Rice Court woman that someone had been making a series of withdrawals at its ATM with her card, about 20 transactions in all. The total amount of cash taken was close to $6,600.
