The following were taken from actual incident reports filed last week by the City of Charleston Police Department. These are not convictions and the names of businesses, complainants, and suspects have been left off to protect the innocent. All suspects are  innocent until proven guilty, of course.
July 29 Death investigation
A man living in a Sam Rittenberg apartment complex called police to say that his roommate was cold and unresponsive. When police arrived, they found the roommate lying on the floor, not breathing. Investigating, the police found several bottles of prescription pills and a syringe in the bathroom sink. When checking the still-alive man’s identification, it turned out he was wanted on a drugs-related parole violation in Wisconsin.
July 29 Disorderly conduct
A man called police to meet him at an Applebee Way address in order to escort him as he removed some of his belongings out of premises. But when police arrived, the man changed his tune, saying he’d rather go to jail. When officers informed him he hadn’t done anything wrong, the man grabbed a nearby plastic recycling bin and threw it at their cruiser. But it did no damage, so the man took his neighbor’s bin and tossed its contents out into the street. He was then arrested.
July 30 Drug violation
A police officer pulled over a vehicle near the corner of Parsonage and Ashley River roads because its license plate was completely covered with mud. The passenger reportedly acted nervously, and was asked to exit the vehicle. When the man got out of the car, an open beer can fell out and began pouring out onto the ground. The passenger claimed the beer was his and that there was nothing else. The driver consented to a search of the car, which resulted in the discovery of a “silver marijuana grinder” and small smoking pipe. The driver said it was his and that there was nothing else in the car.
July 30 Forgery
A Bees Ferry Road bank confirmed that it had deposited checks that had already been reported stolen. As a result, the bank was looking at a loss of over $6,100.
July 30 Resisting arrest
Police patrolling the parking lot of a local pub, noticed a man in dreadlocks exchange money for an unseen item with another man before exiting the parking lot. Police pulled up to the man walking along Hwy. 61 and ordered him to stop. Instead the man took off running, heading into a nearby apartment complex. One officer followed on foot, while the other followed in a cruiser. The man ran between buildings, and was seen throwing an unknown object into a pond. “Damn, all I was doing was throwing a little weed,” the man exclaimed.
July 31 Vandalism
Police arrived at a Savannah Highway pawnshop to find two holes cut into the fences surrounding items held outside the store. Patrolling the area, police noticed two men, one wearing a bandana over his face, pop up and run from the yard. Quickly cornered, the two men were arrested and management said nothing appeared to have been stolen.
July 31 Sex offense with an object
Police responded to a Savannah Highway gas station where they found a woman who claimed to have been “picked up” by a man, and then taken to his apartment, where an alleged sexual offense occurred.
July 31 Injured party
A witness saw a construction worker at a house on Ashley Gardens Boulevard fall 25-30 feet from the roof and onto a pile of 2×8 wood pieces. Police reported that the man’s left ankle was swollen and resting in an “awkward” angle, with the foot parallel with the body.
