The 6th Annual Avondale 5K Run + Walk for Special Kids takes place this Saturday, Oct. 10, benefitting The Charles Webb Center. The Avondale 5K is the 6th largest 5K in Charleston and the only one in West Ashley. Last year’s race welcomed more than 500 participants and raised $70,000 for the West Ashley-based Charles Webb Center. Carolyn Murray, WCBD News 2 anchor and former Avondale resident, will be on-hand to kick off the race which begins at 8:30 a.m. Murray not only is an avid runner, she also’s a big supporter of the local community.
Starting on Magnolia Road in front of Triangle Char and Bar, Avondale 5K runners and walkers will make their way through the lovely streets of the Avondale neighborhood in West Ashley. Strollers and dogs are welcome. The after race Party starts as soon as participants cross the finish line. Triangle Char and Bar is hosting the party complete with live music and all inclusive food and drinks. Awards and prizes will be given at the after party.
Supported by many sponsors like Triangle Char and Bar, WCBD News 2, and the Avondale Business Association, all proceeds from the Avondale 5K benefit The Charles Webb Center, a non-profit, day care center that serves children from age 6 weeks to 10 years old who have developmental disabilities and special needs. The Center is under the umbrella of the Disabilities Board of Charleston County and is located at 1611 Evergreen St., behind Bessinger’s BBQ on Savannah Highway.
In an aggressive effort to raise awareness about the children of the Charles Webb Center, runners and walkers have the option to “Sponsor a Child.” This allows participants to choose a specific child to run/walk for. They can create teams and get sponsors. For the team with the highest amount of funds raised in the name of a child, Triangle will throw them a private party for 25 with drinks and food! Last year’s winning team, “Anna Blake” raised more than $16,000!
The top winner will have the honor of their name being engraved on the prestigious “Stevie Award,” named after the late Stephen Condon in whose memory the race was founded.
