Last week, students, teachers, parents, and administrators at West Ashley High School were saddened to learn of the passing of the schools Navy JROTC instructor Master Chief Timothy Strickland.
“It’s with a heavy-heart that I talk with you this afternoon,” said WAHS principal William Runyon in a written statement last week. “Earlier today we learned of the passing of one of our instructors at West Ashley High School, NJROTC instructor, Master Chief Timothy Strickland. This news will have an impact on everyone at our school and local community. Our hearts go out to his students, colleagues, family members, and the many community members whose lives have been enriched by knowing Tim. The best way we can honor his life is to always remember him for who he was: an incredible mentor, teacher, and friend for he will be greatly missed.”
Strickland was a beloved and well-respected teacher at WAHS, leading the school’s rifle team to several state championships and making them one of the top programs in the nation.
According to Runyon, starting this week. WAHS has counselors available in the school’s media center for students needing support. Staff counseling services are also available during each planning period.
