Liza Ellen Warner’s life was tragically cut short when her husband shot and killed her on Oct. 1, 2004. He then took his own life. Doug and Shirley Warner, Liza’s father and stepmother, wanted to find a way to turn their family’s tragic loss into a means of honoring life and providing hope. They, along with others dedicated to their cause, formed Liza’s Lifeline of South Carolina, Inc. and obtained official 501 (c)(3) public charity status on June 16, 2008.
The Warner’s efforts have literally saved lives. From 2005-2009 in South Carolina, there were: 442 domestic homicides, 6,476 acts of domestic sexual violence, and 272,763 different types of domestic violence related incidents. But the domestic violence victimization rate in South Carolina dropped 23.3 percent from 148.7 per 10,000 in 2005 to 114.1 per 10,000 in 2009. Much of that improvement can be attributed to organizations such as Liza’s Lifeline, which is dedicated to assisting domestic violence victims, their families, pets and their community through financial assistance, education, and social change.
“Last year Liza’s Lifeline helped more victims and also spoke about domestic violence at more events and organizations than it ever has,” said Liza’s father Doug Warner, President Liza’s Lifeline of SC.
But we still have a long way to go as South Carolina ranks first in the nation for domestic violence-related homicides. There are things you can do to help. One of them is by participating in Liza’s Lifeline’s 7th annual Golf Tournament at Shadowmoss Plantation Golf Club in West Ashley on Saturday, April 16. This annual event serves to help victims of domestic violence.
Teams are made up of 4-persons and the tournament is captain’s choice. Check-in is at 11:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at 1:30 p.m. There will be beverage carts on the course and food, drinks and awards at the Shadowmoss Pavilion after the tournament. Participants can win $10,000 or a trip for two to Hawaii for a hole-in-one on the 16th hole.
Registration ends April 14. Cost is $65 per person ($50 for Shadowmoss members) and all proceeds are tax deductible. There is a gold sponsorship for $300 (includes four players), and a silver for $100.
“This is our biggest fundraiser and allows Liza’s Lifeline to help victims of domestic violence get out of immediate danger by providing bus tickets, gas cards, and deposits on utilities/rent to set up new living arrangements, etc., and also to raise much needed awareness in our community,” said Doug Warner. “We work with the Tri-county area Victim Advocates and other agencies, including My Sister’s House, PAR and SC Victim’s Assistance Network, to help give victims a new start.”
Shadowmoss Plantation Golf Club is located at 20 Dunvegan Dr.  To register or for more information visit www.lizaslifelinesc.org.
