While many anxiously await the opening of Whole Foods on Savannah Highway, and many others cling to every Facebook rumor that a Trader Joe’s is coming to our side of town, it was an grand opening last week that put a smile on the faces of all men (and most women) all over West Ashley.
On Friday, Nov. 11, West Ashley True Value opened its doors and many, including Mayor John Tecklenburg were on hand to celebrate. While the mayor purchased a rake to take care of the leaves in the yard of his West Ashley home, store owner Waylon Cain handed the mayor a giant pair of scissors to cut the ribbon officially announcing the store’s arrival.
Sure high-end, big box grocery stores are great and often can signal economic resurgence to an area, but a locally-owned, neighborhood hardware store is really the building blocks to a community.
“This community has so many great retail stores,” says Cain. “The purpose of West Ashley True Value is to fill the void for a local ‘One Stop Shop’ small business.”
West Ashley True Value is located at the corner of Ashley River and Wappoo roads in the Ashley Oaks Plaza, which is undergoing a major facelift.
