With the recent public outcry and community support for Caitlyn, the Staffordshire Terrier who sustained serious injuries after having her muzzled was taped shut, there’s no denying that Charlestonians love pets. That’s why it’s no surprise that when Consign Charleston in West Ashley hosted its second annual Lbs. For Pounds benefit event on Saturday, June 6, folks came out in droves to support the cause.
If shoppers brought in 10 pounds of pet food, they received 10 percent off their entire purchase. If they brought in 20 pounds or more of pet food, they received 20 percent of their entire purchase. By the end of the day, Consign Charleston had received nearly a half ton of food for the Charleston Animal Society: 988.5 pounds to be exact, several hundred more pounds than they received last year.
In addition to the Lbs. For Pounds event, Consign Charleston also hosts an annual “Shop N Shuck” event in December, where funds are donated to Charleston Animal Society. People can also bring food by at any time to the donation box set up near the customer service area in the front of the store.
“We support the Charleston Animal Society because they are a no-kill shelter. We believe passionately that every animal is worth saving and deserves placement into a better home if necessary,” said Beth Burell-Flynn, who along with her wife Seana Burell-Flynn, own Consign Charleston on Sam Rittenberg Boulevard. “We also love that they help all types of animals … not just cats and dogs. We have three rescues ourselves.”
According to Kay Hyman, it’s businesses like Consign Charleston and the individuals who came out for this event, that help the Charleston Animal Society sustain a no-kill shelter. “The support of Consign Charleston is crucial to our community staying no-kill. Not only do they support us financially they help us by feeding the animals in our community and helping animals find homes,” said Hyman. “Our food bank is crucial to many families with pets who are having tough times. Many of the people who rely on our food bank each week would have to give their pets up if they did not have the food bank as a safety net.”
