On Saturday, Nov. 14, the American Lung Association in South Carolina will host the annual Lung Force Run/Walk on Folly Beach to support the nationwide Lung Force initiative. Now in its second year, this initiative seeks to make lung cancer in women a public health priority, drive policy change and increase research funding. Registration can be completed online at lungforce.org and costs $25 per person.
During the week leading up to the Lung Force Run/Walk, Nov 8-13, Avondale businesses will be turning their store fronts turquoise to raise awareness for lung cancer, the number one cancer killer in women. The neighborhood will also host nightly events to raise funds for the Lung Force campaign. Participating businesses include Al Di La, Avondale Wine & Cheese, Charleston Community Yoga, Gala Desserts, Lava Salon, Mellow Mushroom, Pearlz Little Oyster Bar, Verde, VooDoo Tiki Bar & Lounge and West Of.
Lava Salon will be installing turquoise extensions to rock their support of the American Lung Association. Customers can purchase a turquoise extension for only $10 throughout the month of November from which all proceeds benefit Lung Force. Gala Desserts will sell Lung Force cupcakes all month long and donate $1 for each cupcake sold. Additional weekly benefit nights in the neighborhood include:
• Tuesday, Nov. 10: Wine Night @ Avondale Wine & Cheese (6-8 pm)
• Wednesday, Nov. 11: Giveback Night @ Al Di La (5-8 pm)
• Thursday, Nov. 12: Mindful Flow Yoga Donation Class @ Charleston Community Yoga (6 pm)
• Friday, Nov 13: Lung Force Cocktail Night @ Voodoo Tiki Bar Lounge
“We invite everyone in Charleston and the surrounding communities to join us in Avondale for nightly events as well as at the Lung Force Run/Walk at the Folly Beach Fishing Pier on Nov. 14 as we raise our voices against lung cancer,” says Margaret Ann Mabry, Development Manager for the American Lung Association in South Carolina.
In South Carolina, more than 1,500 women are diagnosed with lung cancer each year, and another 1,100 lose their lives to the disease. By participating in the Avondale events and the Lung Force Run/Walk, community members can help raise critical funds for research into better detection and targeted treatments for lung cancer.
