Local salon owner and hairdresser Jamie Brunson Millard has been fighting bad hairstyle in the Charleston area for more than 20 years. But lately she’s been in a much bigger fight. A much more personal fight. In 2013 the vibrant wife and mother of two was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer.
After several rounds of chemotherapy, a double mastectomy, and reconstruction, Millard’s cancer was in remission. However, in December 2014 doctors found an aggressive tumor and other smaller tumors in her back, spine, and hips. The tumors aren’t shrinking, but they also aren’t spreading. The pain has been so bad that at times she can barely stand. Torture to someone who has built her career being on her feet. It has also been a financial burden to her and her family. That is why her sister Bridget King started a Go Fund Me site to help her sister out and get her back on her feet.
Some local West Ashley businesses are also stepping up to help out, including the fellow hair stylists at Lava Salon in the Avondale Business District. Lava is offering raffle tickets for $3 each or 2 for $5 with 100 percent of the proceeds going to Millard. The raffle is for a basket full of products, hair tools, gift certificates to various places, etc. It has a value of more than $600. Additionally they will donate $5 from every brow wax all month long to the cause.
“We believe the salon industry should look after their own. We have invited and hope that many of our other stylist friends and salons will consider donating too,” said Geoff Richardson, co-owner of Lava Salon.
On Saturday, Oct. 17 Avondale Wine & Cheese will be hosting a silent auction with some gift baskets from Fire Fly, Terrapin, and Lava Salon. One-hundred percent of the money from the auction will go directly to Millard. Avondale Wine & Cheese will also be donating $1 from every glass of wine sold that night to the cause. Also on that day, Lava Salon will offer “pay what you will” blowouts and makeup applications with all the proceeds going directly to Millard.
