Café Charlotte blends European pastries and Southern hospitality

Tucked into a quiet shopping plaza off Orleans Road, Café Charlotte recently opened its doors to the community and word is quickly spreading throughout West Ashley. But Café Charlotte is more than just a coffee and pastry spot. It’s the dream-turned-reality of Tom and Rachel Eichhorn, who moved from Berlin, Germany, to Charleston just over a year ago with their children—and a shipping container full of memories.
Inside the welcoming café, warm, personal touches—like an old-timey telephone and a vintage newspaper rack—hint at the couple’s roots. On the wall, black-and-white photos of back home serve as both decor and homage. “We brought some stuff from our home,” says Rachel, gesturing around the cozy space. “Everything in this place is personal.”
Tom, a former electronic engineer turned food sales manager in Germany, eventually followed his true calling by enrolling in culinary school. “Food is a passion for me,” he says. “Food is the international language.”
His passion is evident in every detail—from the handmade apple strudel to the pillowy-soft babka, which has quickly become a customer favorite. “People know babka. Everyone knows apple strudel,” he says with a smile.
Café Charlotte—named after Tom’s grandmother, who first brought him to the U.S. when he was 10—is a fusion of old-world recipes and new-world charm. “There’s a definite European influence in our pastries,” explains Tom. “Our buttercream is a little less sweet than American desserts. Don’t get me wrong—I love a good Boston cream donut—but this is different.”
The couple wanted a café that offered quick service and a relaxed vibe—something they could manage themselves while still being present for their kids. “We love West Ashley,” says Tom. “People are so friendly and welcoming. We wanted to create a place that feels like home.”
Rachel, who studied Psychology in Berlin and now works as a counselor in West Ashley, says the space naturally invites connection. “A café has a different feel than a restaurant,” she says. “People meet here, talk, spend time. We’ve had a very positive response from the community.”
Beyond pastries, Café Charlotte also serves Mediterranean-style bagels, hearty subs, fresh salads, and of course, coffee. Lots of it. “America invented its own coffee culture. Starbucks gets some credit for that,” admits Tom. “But we have a heavy-duty espresso machine. Our cappuccino tastes like it does in Italy—we spent some time there, too.”
With early hours and a menu designed for ease and freshness, Café Charlotte has carved out a sweet little niche in the heart of West Ashley. And at its core, it’s about more than just food. They’ve poured their hearts into creating a place where people feel welcome. At Café Charlotte, food is a way to share stories, celebrate culture, and build community.
