After an outstanding season on the West Ashley High School varsity volleyball team, senior Lindsay Michaels was selected as one of only 48 seniors in the state to play in the North-South All Star Volleyball Match at Erskine College in Due West.
There were four All Star teams that participated in the event: South 1A/2A, North 1A/2A, South 3A/4A, and North 3A/4A. Michaels was on the South 3A/4A team with other talented players within her division. In the matches, Michaels did not play setter (the position she played on the WAHS team), instead she played as a defensive specialist (DS) and did a great job in all the games.
On Friday, Nov. 20 the South teams played each other, with the South 3A/4A team winning the first two sets out of three. The North teams also played each other and the North 3A/4A team won.
The North vs. South matches were played on Saturday, November 21st. The 3A/4A teams played each other and the South 3A/4A team beat the North 3A/4A team in each of the first three sets. The All Star event is sponsored by the South Carolina Coaches Association of Women’s Sports (SCCAWS), which emphasizes that sportsmanship is of highest importance. To ensure every All Star player received equal playing time, the teams played a fourth set, and the South 3A / 4A team came out on top again. The South 3A/4A team, the team on which Michaels played, went undefeated the entire tournament. Her team was the only one of the four teams to do so.
“I could not be happier that Lindsay was a part of this event. This event was more than just volleyball; it allowed these young women to experience being on a team with solid dedication, great sportsmanship, and even had a community outreach opportunity,” says WAHS Head Varsity Volleyball Coach Virginia Broadway.
All of the players who made the All Star teams arrived Thursday, Nov. 19, the day before the volleyball matches, to meet and get to know their teammates, and to do community service with them. Players traveled together with their teammates to a local elementary school and read to the students.
At the end of the match on Saturday, all players from all four teams were presented with plaques recognizing them as this year’s All Star players.
