The Youth Art Gallery at West Ashley Branch Library returns with Spring exhibit, summer packets now available

Last year, the recently reopened West Ashley Library in South Windermere began a program that highlighted the work of some of West Ashley’s youngest artists. Spearheaded by the Assistant Branch Manager Andrea LaFalce, the Youth Art Gallery program allows local students in 1st-5th grades to pick up a packet that contains a welcome letter, instructions, a canvas fitted to the library’s exhibit space, and basic art supplies to get the kids started. Although the children are welcome and encouraged to use their own materials, says LaFalce. There is also a gallery reception for each installation, and the artists are allowed to invite friends and family.

According to LaFalce, the Youth Art Gallery took a hiatus over the winter, but returned in April with the theme of “What comes to mind when you think of the spring season?”

“We were so excited to host this program again, and it was incredible to see the level of excitement from patrons to participate. All of us here at the library really enjoyed seeing the art work come in, and it was clear that so much heart went into making each piece,” says LaFalce. Due to the program’s popularity, she says they had to increase the participants from eight to 12.

The current exhibit will be on display in the Youth Art Gallery until the end of June. Beginning June 1, patrons are invited to pick up packets for the summer exhibit, which will be on display July & August.
