Unmasked West Ashley’s very own “Googly-eye Bandit”
by Joan Perry | Contributing Writer
A couple of times a week, I get a message with a picture asking, “Did you do this?”
At least once a month, someone says, “You left an eyeball in my car.”
We don’t have the statues and figures that downtown Charleston has, so West Ashley is a challenge. It’s inspired creativity using cypress knees, planters, signs, and murals. Unlike the “Googly Eye Bandit,” who got attention in Bend, Oregon, no eyeballs are left behind for the city to remove, and no trace is left after the quick photo op. A recent prankster in Savannah added Googly Eyes to a statue of Revolutionary War Hero Nathaniel Green. They were quickly removed but not before the image was reproduced on t-shirts.
It’s innocent fun, and no eyeballs are left behind. You might recognize some of these West Ashley locations.
