West Ashley High School senior Malik Brown dominated the field as an outside linebacker in the first game of the 2015 football season. “Malik has been the leader on defense and keyed our defensive effort in holding Bishop England scoreless in our 41-0 win Friday. He led the way with 12 tackles, 6 solo tackles, and was the leader on the Defense in our shutout over BE,” says Head Coach Robert Marion.
For the past 10 years Brown has dedicated his heart and soul to the game, but he didn’t always take football so seriously. “I was in my backyard throwing the ball around and my brother told me I was too soft to play this game,” says Brown. Since then, he’s worked hard to prove his older brother wrong.
As a freshman, Brown made the WAHS All-Star Football Team. As a senior, his coaches look to him for not only his adept skills, but also his leadership abilities. “He has played outside linebacker for two years and continues to get better and better. He is very smart about the game of football, and combined with being a very physical player, he is our defensive leader,” says Assistant Coach Thomas Cousins. “We are counting on him this season to be a vital part of the defense and be a team leader throughout the season,” Coach Marion says.
Not giving up when the score is down is one tactic that has helped Brown be so successful on the field. He remembers how much work he’s put in and that helps him to work even harder. With just one season left before he graduates, Brown is determined for the Wildcats to come out on top. “I feel as though we are going to bring something back this season,” he says. If their first game was any indication, Brown just may get his wish.
When Brown graduates in the Spring of 2016, he plans to attend Coastal Carolina University where he will continue to play football.
