Junior volleyball player, Alex King, has served the West Ashley High School Varsity Volleyball Team well this season. Her motivation and keen focus have been a driving force for the team as a whole. “She was chosen as a captain because she has a positive attitude and always encourages her teammates,” says WAHS Volleyball coach Virginia Broadway. “As one of the three returning Varsity players, I was really looking to her for her leadership skills.”
One of the reasons King is such a good leader on the court is because she puts in the effort to know and like her teammates. When asked what she enjoys most about volleyball, King says, “I like how close you get with your team.” She’s met quite a few new people since she started playing volleyball; some have even come to be her closest friends.
Since King was in the 6th grade, she has played and honed her skills on the court. She got her start by following in her mother’s footsteps. “My mom played [volleyball], so it’s kind of her sport,” says King. “I just kind of followed it.” King’s mother played volleyball when she was in high school; she still coaches and referees games, and she is adamant about supporting King and her team by attending all of their games. This is no small feat either considering King plays year-round.
In the offseason King plays club volleyball, which she claims helps her to stay in shape and to keep building her skills. Whatever she does must work because Broadway has been pleased with her performance. “She’s a very consistent server, and I know that I can rely on her to earn points for the team,” says Broadway. King serves as the libero, the rearmost, roaming defensive player in volleyball, which is one of the most difficult and coveted positions on the court. This is one of many reasons she was named an All-Region player for 5A Region 7 this season. It goes without saying that King takes volleyball very seriously.
Although King and her teammates lost in the first round of Playoffs to Conway High, they’re optimistic about next season. The Varsity team was very young this year. In fact, the majority of the team was comprised of juniors and sophomores who are excited to be returning, just as King will, for at least one more season.
Although she loves volleyball, King claims that she does have to sacrifice a decent portion of her free time in order to play. When she isn’t busy practicing or playing in a match, King says she enjoys going to the beach and socializing with her friends. She makes school and completing her homework a priority, and she is involved in numerous extracurricular activities including Young Life, National Honor Society, and Student Government Association.
