The laughs just keep on coming … and they keep on coming to the Tin Roof in West Ashley. The popular dive bar has become the place to catch local and touring stand-up comedians. Last month, Tin Roof welcomed California comic Grant Lyon, who helped provide some much-needed laughs for Charleston following the heart-wrenching events of June 17 at the Mother Emmanuel AME church. And this week, New York comedian Derek Humphrey will have people rolling when he brings his deadpan wit back to Charleston.
“Charleston: I didn’t spend the last three years not sleeping or taking care of myself because I wanted to be mediocre at comedy,” says Humphry. No stranger to the Lowcountry, Humphrey has performed with Theatre 99 in the past.
He’s trained in improve , sketch acting, and storytelling from the schools of the Upright Citizen’s Brigade in Chicago, Peoples Improv Theater, and Magnet Theater in New York City.
As a stand-up, he has toured nationally, headlined festivals and shared the stage with such acts as Jim Gaffigan, TJ Miller, Nate Bargatze and Hannibal Burress. A regular on the club scene, Humphry is a polished stand up, who has a knack for great storytelling. In various forms of comedy, he has appeared in the Del Close Marathon, the Moth Story Telling Show and works for MTV, ABC News and the New York Post.
When not performing comedy, Humphrey says he enjoys basketball, chicken, and spending quality time with his bulldog Henrietta.
Derek Humphrey will perform We, July 8 at the Tin Roof, located at 1117 Magnolia Road. For more information call 571-0775. or visit www.charlestontinroof.com.
