The exhibit Order & Disorder opens this week at Jericho Arts, the gallery at Jericho Advisors, features a collection of abstract art from several local artists. Displaying paintings, sculptures, drawings, and fiber art, the disparate mediums are sure to impress and intrigue viewers. The artists included in the exhibit are Kristy Bishop, Matthew Shoemaker Dietz, Kelly Macdonald, Kristen Moran, Jeremy Pelt, Christine Bush Roman, J. Powers Shepard, and James Wine.
An exciting aspect of this showcase will be the contrasting representations of abstraction. Works by Wine and Bishop demonstrate precision through geometric influences, while Pelt, Dietz, and Roman slip into movement and incorporate non-uniform shapes into their pieces.
The materials used to create such a variety of paintings, sculptures, etc. add to the curiosity and surprise of the exhibit as a whole. Less common materials used in the exhibit include fabric and layered paper. It is the goal for each work featured in Order & Disorder to allow the viewer to connect with the art on a personal level. With this exhibit, each artist strives to achieve this through structure and color.
One of the featured exhibitors, Kristy Bishop, adds to the interest and palette of the gallery with her unique series of work. This accumulation of three years of creative thought and hard work comes alive with natural and synthetic dyes, all of which Bishop makes by hand.
Another artist featured, Jeremy Pelt, is a professor at College of Charleston as well as a painter. According to Pelt, some of the artists that influence him most are Manet, Doig, and Miro. However, he also keeps up with contemporary artists from around the world. In fact, it’s thanks to Instagram that Pelt was discovered by Jericho Arts.
Pelt’s main medium is oil painting, though his work varies in distinct finishes. Pelt finds there to be strength in variety, even within his own work. His work stands out from the work of other artists due to its diverse textures and captivating colors.
The exhibit Order & Disorder will open Thursday, Feb. 12 with a reception from 6-9 p.m. Jericho Advisors is located at 815 Savannah Hwy. For more information, call 212-8482 or visit www.jerichoadvisors.com.
