Certified holistic health coach Stephanie Burg will be teaching a hands-on fermentation workshop at Spacecraft Studios in West Ashley this Saturday, April 26. The workshop, Fermentation 101 + Probiotics is geared toward education about the importance of healthy digestion and how you can easily support your own by making fermented foods at home.
The Fermentation 101 + Probiotics class is a little different than what you might expect at Spacecraft, whose usual offerings are arts and crafts related. “Allison (Merrick, Spacecraft owner) has always wanted to have a kombucha making class at SpaceCraft and I believe cooking and especially fermenting is a craft and art form in and of itself,” says Burg. “I recommend this class for anyone who likes to get creative in the kitchen and is interested in using food as medicine.”
Burg began fermenting herself about 2-3 years ago when she discovered that she had several latent food sensitivities that had damaged her digestion. “A friend introduced me to fermentation as a way to really support and heal my gut with whole foods,” says Burg, who is also a ballet dancer.
A healthy gut and strong digestion are keys to vitality, energy and overall lasting health. During Fermentation 101 + Probiotics, Burg will teach participants how to support their inner ecosystem naturally. The workshop will discuss the importance of healthy digestion, why probiotics are essential to overall health, and how to create probiotic-rich supplements at home using live, cultured foods.
“Probiotics are the good bacteria, present in our digestive tract, that help keep our immune system thriving and our digestion running smoothly,” says Burg. Pretty much everything stems from our digestion of the food we eat, including our blood, our skin, our muscles and even our thoughts and emotions. When the good bacteria become disrupted by infections or bad bacteria, we get sick and are more prone to chronic illness. So it’s really important to supplement with probiotics.”
Burg will share hands-on, basic recipes and techniques to create delicious fermented veggies and beverages.  “I’ll be teaching participants some easy recipes for sauerkraut and kombucha and they’ll leave with both of those items as well as the tools to continue creating more ferments on their own at home.”
