from Staff Reports
Every October, West Ashley comes alive with the pounding of sneakers on pavement, smiling faces at the finish line, and a strong sense of purpose. On Saturday, Oct. 11, neighbors, runners, walkers, families, and supporters will gather for the 16th annual Avondale 5K, a homegrown tradition that champions local children with special needs.
If you’ve been looking for a meaningful way to connect with neighbors, get some fresh air, and support children with special needs, mark your calendar. Whether you run, walk, cheer, or volunteer, your presence helps sustain a West Ashley tradition that continues to grow with heart and purpose.
The Avondale 5K is more than a local fitness event — it’s a fundraiser with heart. Since its founding in 2010, all proceeds have supported the Charles Webb Center right here in West Ashley. The developmental daycare operated by the Disabilities Board of Charleston County serves children with special needs from six weeks to ten years old. Avondale 5k Funds raised help provide classroom equipment, supplies, meals, and overall operational support, making the 5K a vital pillar for sustaining the center’s mission.
In past years, the Avondale 5K has drawn hundreds of participants, from seasoned runners seeking a personal best to families pushing strollers, students building team fundraising pages, and local volunteers lending a hand. The event has long been woven into the fabric of West Ashley as both a fitness milestone and a unifying community cause.
Volunteers are always in demand, and organizers welcome individuals or groups willing to help with timing, course marshals, registration, or the after-race party. Those interested can contact the race team via Info@avondale5k.com.
Check-in for this rain or shine event begins at 7 a.m., and the race launches promptly at 8 a.m. The event headquarters is Triangle Char + Bar, located at 828 Savannah Hwy., where participants will also enjoy an after-race celebration from 9- 11 a.m. in the parking lot. Packet pick-up is also at Triangle Char + Bar from 4-7 p.m. the afternoon before the race.
